Opening reception & live music
“repurposed, found & pirated—altered art by Tom Johanson”

Experimental artist & accomplished guitarist Tom Johanson will exhibit repurposed & altered collages and mandalas; Tom will then play music influenced by folk flamenco jazz rock and psychedelic surf rock pop!

About the Artist
Experimental artist Tom Johanson combines imagery and messages from print media into intricate mystical and personal compositions. His altered clippings of pop culture, nature and art pictures are transformed into playful collages and meaningful visions. Tom also creates mini collages and hand-drawn mandalas on the covers of custom CD compilations of his own music. Tom Johanson is also an accomplished guitarist and has been playing in bands and solo for 50 years. He began his career in the early 60s playing with Jimi Hendrix, Paul Butterfield, Jose Feliciano, Richie Havens, and many other inhabitants of the East Village in NYC. His band, The Fugitives, was the first rock band signed to Columbia Records, and has several hits on the charts in NY in the 1960s. Now Tom plays with the Feel Good Band with changing members. His music is influenced by “folk flamenco jazz rock and psychedelic surf rock pop”.

Aurora’s Calling will perform a concert at the Flood Gallery on September 10 from 7pm to 9pm, located at 850 Blue Ridge Rd in Black Mountain, NC. These concert series at the Flood Gallery are free and open to the public, but donations for the performers and sound person are always appreciated!

Aurora’s Calling is husband and wife duo of AL “StumpWater” Lyons and Karen Kates-Lyons. They’ve been playing music together ever since meeting at an open-mic in July 1993. Featuring Karen’s celestial vocals/harmonies with AL’s intricate guitar and piano. For many years they toured all around Florida, as well as Atlanta, GA, playing at art festivals, folk festivals, coffee houses, galleries, pubs, and Unitarian Universalist coffee houses. In 1994, they were named best music duo in Florida. They were featured on WMNF 88.5 and other NPR stations in Florida. Their music compilation/CD “Angels * Fairies * Astronauts,” recorded live in the historic train station of downtown Tarpon Springs, FL in 1996, to rave reviews, is still available on Spotify and Apple iTunes. You can hear their music streamed from their YouTube channel and follow their FB page! They took a 20 year break to raise the kids, and are excited to be on stage, making music again.

“This duo certainly transports you to another world, kinda like a really good book. AC does it with masterful fingerpicked acoustic and madrigal-quality vocals that would be at home in a high court circa 1430 or thereabouts. Troilus could have used ‘em for a gig…”
